When Columbus stumbled across the Lucayan Taino people of the Bahama archipelago in 1492, he encountered a society that was extraordinarily well adapted to life in these dry and resource deficient islands. In this lecture, Dr. Pete Sinelli will share results from three very different sites he has excavated across the Bahama archipelago to explore the diverse manner in which Indigenous peoples settled the region. These sites demonstrate that flexibility, mobility, and access to marine resources were paramount concerns throughout the settlement process. These case studies also show that the pattern of settlement did not evolve linearly over time but remained fluid and targeted to address both immediate and developing economic and social needs.
