Meet The Team
President
Hannah J. Johnson
Hannah is a 2nd year PhD student of Anthropology with a concentration in paleoanthropology. Her research interests include hominid evolutionary anatomy and hominid functional morphology. Her dissertation research examines the functional morphology of the hind limb in hominins pertaining to the relationship between the femoral bicondylar angle and ACL injury in extant humans under the advisory of Dr. Juliet Brophy. She received her B.S. in Anthropology from the University of Iowa with research experience in craniofacial feminization and principal components analysis under the advisory of Dr. Robert Franciscus. She has conducted research and fieldwork in Olduvai Gorge, Tanzania and the Gulf South.​​

Julia Johnston
Julia is a 2nd year PhD student of Anthropology with a concentration in bioarchaeology. Her research interests include Andean bioarchaeology with a focus on the repatriation and ethical treatment of ancient human remains, advised by Dr. David Chicoine. Her current research focuses on these issues in both Peru and the United States, comparing legal, local, and archaeological perspectives on the excavation and storage of human remains in both countries. She received her B.A. in Anthropology from the University of Notre Dame and is currently conducting ongoing fieldwork on the northern coast of Peru.

Treasurer
Henry Hanks
Henry is an undergraduate junior majoring in anthropology and sociology with minors in health sciences and LGBTQ+ studies. Their research interests include social and behavioral health, sexual and reproductive health, LGBTQ+ health, racial/ethnic health disparities, and the social determinants of health. They currently assist Dr. Jaclyn Hadfield (Department of Kinesiology) in researching how cultural norms and lived experiences surrounding body image influence Italian and U.S. women’s exercise participation. They are also involved in the Louisiana Coalition for Reproductive Freedom, LSU Student Government, and LSU Feminists in Action, where they serve as Vice President.

Sonnet Mandell
Sonnet is a 1st year PhD student of Anthropology under the advisory of Dr. Kory Konsoer. Her research interests include 3D imaging, bioarchaeology, biocultural anthropology, paleoanthropology, material culture, primatology, and osteology. She is currently in the process of developing her graduate research topic. Sonnet received her B.A. in Anthropology with a minor in international studies, concentrating on global cultures, from Louisiana State University and has previously conducted fieldwork in Belize.

Gillian Stewart
Gillian is a 1st year Master's student of Anthropology with a focus in forensics. Her research interests include human sacrifice, bioarchaeology, taphonomy, and identifying remains. She is advised by Dr. Ginesse Listi. She received her B.A. in Anthropology and Classical Civilizations from the University of Pittsburgh. She has conducted fieldwork in Pennsylvania through the Student Conservation Association (Pennsylvania Outdoor Corps) and in Belize through the Maya Research Program associated with PennWest Edinboro and Texas A&M University. She has experience in the medicolegal sphere through a morgue internship and assisting in forensic odontological assessments. She is currently in the process of developing her Master's thesis. ​

Faculty Advisor
David Chicoine, PhD
David joined the LSU faculty in 2008. Prior to joining LSU, he studied at the Université de Montréal (Canada) and the University of East Anglia (UK) and completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Simon Fraser University (Canada). His research focuses on the ancient societies that developed in the Andean region of South America, especially coastal Peru where he has been conducting fieldwork since the late 1990s.
